The Wild Goose Chase MTB Race and Trail Run took place on Retief Goosen’s wine farm (Goose Wines), just north of George, in Upper Langkloof over the Easter weekend on March 30th.  The field of 100 or so participants braved the stormy weather predictions to ride the 35km and 75km MTB route, in cool and cloudy weather, with the beautiful Upper Langkloof Mountains as their backdrop.

“Supporting this niche Western Cape community in a start-up MTB race seemed appropriate considering our more dominant sponsorship presence in the KZN area”, said Wendy Marshall of MiWay’s marketing department. “Although weather predictions significantly reduced participant numbers on the day, there is potential for the Wild Goose events to draw bigger numbers in the future. From an organisational point of view, TriSport was a pleasure to partner with and their professionalism was evident in all of our dealings with them.”

The 35km and 75km MTB riders had a muddy start with a tough 2km climb on the well known voortrekkerpas above Louvain, which saw a few dismounts and long walks.

A great mix of jeep track, single track, technical rocky areas and beautiful scenery kept the riders on their toes for the rest of the race. Daniel Hodgins tied up the 35km race in 1:07:05, with Timo Cooper claiming the 75km title in 2:49:58.
