For the past 18 months, South African mountain bike racer, Philip Buys, has been on a steep improvement curve that’s seen him go from good rider to Olympian. His transformation has been due to his following a more structured, scientific training strategy, which he is now taking to the next level with his partnership with new title sponsor, USN.

USN, one of the world’s leading sports nutrition companies, has partnered with the likes of Springbok rugby player Pierre Spies, Proteas cricket star AB De Villiers global mountain bike star Burry Stander, ultra-endurance athlete Martin Dreyer and South African hockey hero, Justin Reid Ross in an effort to optimise their nutrition both in and out of competition.

Buys has now been added to the elite group of international sports stars and will work closely with USN as well as his coach, Dr Jeroen Swart, to fine tune his nutrition supplementation and diet to ensure optimal performance and recovery.

“I used to just train to feel and never really knew my potential and didn’t monitor my progress and recovery. But after training with Dr Swart, who coaches very scientifically, I’ve been able to go from being lapped at World Cup cross-country races, to finishing a few minutes behind the winner,” said Buys, who finished a personal best 15th overall at the USA round of the 2012 mountain bike World Cup in June.

“One area that’s still possible to improve is my nutrition. USN is the leading brand when it comes to sports nutrition and I need that kind of support now to get my body into the best shape it has ever been,” said Buys, whose short-term goals are a top 10 at the London Olympic Games and a top 10 at the 2012 World Championships.

“Next year and beyond, I plan to race the whole World Cup Series and move up into the top 10 in the world rankings. With the world championships in South Africa next year, that will be a big focus for me too,” added Buys. “Qualification for the 2016 Olympics will be a long-term goal of course.”

“USN is a brand understands sports performance at the highest level. They knowexactly what athletes need and they know what it takes to be the best.

I feelthat I will improve further and reach my true potential with the support of USN, not only as my sponsor, but also as my nutrition guide.”

Buys will join Stander to represent South Africa at the Olympic mountain bike race in London on Sunday, 12 August.
