  • DNA by DataDot: Bicycle I.D. kit

A trusted security system gets involved in bicycle safety!

DataDot Technology is already trusted by car manufacturers and fit 100% of Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Nissan, Suzuki, Renault, Jaguar, Land-Rover and Toyota vehicles in South Africa with their advanced Microdot security system. DataDot has decreased car theft by a massive 50%.

Finally! This technology is now available for your bicycle, and is catching on quick in MTB circles!

    How does it work?

Each DataDot Bicycle kit contains 1000 Microdots. Each is laser-etched with a unique 10 digit PIN which is registered to your name. The kit also contains a specialised adhesive which has UV properties. The Microdots are applied using the adhesive in an easy DIY process, in the comfort of your own home!

Your registration information is stored on the DataDot Database which 10 000 trained Police officers across the country have direct access to. These police officers are of detective level and have recieved special training from DataDot Technology!

    Benefits:

    • Peace-of-mind knowing that after a theft, your bike is less likely to be sold or used for parts
    • Peace-of-mind knowing that you can unequivically prove ownership of your bike and its parts
    • Unlike a bike’s serial number which can be tampered with, the DataDot Technology’s 1000 Microdots are unseen to the visible eye and spread all over your bike, making it difficult to remove
    • The 1000 microdots ensure that multiple parts of your bicycle are identifiable and registered to you

Stats from vehicle theft investigations show that organised crime syndicates quickly become aware of manufacturers who use DataDot Technology, which results in those car types being less desirable to steal. DataDot Technology is hoping that bicycle manufacturers catch on and begin using DataDot Technology as standard practice at factory-level.

MiWay is giving away 100 FREE DataDot bicycles Kits to the first 100 registrants at the MiWay Big5 MTB series Kwambo Lion race this Sunday in KZN. Valued at R143 each! Click here for more info on this race!

  • TREAD Ladies Tea & Trail heads for KZN

After two years of success in Johannesburg, TREAD Ladies Trail and Tea, presented by MiWayMTB, an initiative aimed at making mountain biking more accessible to women, will make its debut in KwaZulu-Natal.

Scheduled for Friday 2 September at Holla Trails, Ballito, the first KZN TREAD Ladies Trail & Tea will offer an opportunity for women to ride without any ‘barriers’ and will cater for all levels of rider, from beginner to more serious.
“Unlike most men, who grew up riding bicycles, most women didn’t and lack the confidence to just get on a mountain bike and ride. Our Ladies Trail & Tea events are designed to remove any intimidation elements and make mountain biking fun for all women,” said Joanne Badenhorst, publisher of TREAD Magazine and founder of the Ladies Trail & Tea initiative.

Holla Trails, a popular, safe mountain bike trails venue 30 minutes drive from Durban. Riders will be arranged into groups according to skill and/or fitness level and guided appropriately by experienced female riders.

“As the name suggests, we always follow the ride, which is between 90 minutes and two hours in duration, with a social gathering that includes eats, drinks and a gift. Most women enjoy the social side of mountain biking and we ensure that is firmly in place at all our Trail & Tea events,” said Badenhorst.

The maximum number of riders for the Ladies Trail & Tea is 16 and places will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis.

In addition to the Ladies Trail & Tea event, a TREAD Skills 101 Clinic and a TREAD Confidence Clinic will be held at Holla Trails on Saturday 3 September. The Confidence Clinic is ideal for those new to mountain biking (male and female), while the 101 Clinic is aimed at improving the skills of those who have been riding mountain bikes for at least six months (male and female).

    Itinerary:
Friday 2 September: Ladies Trail and Tea (08h30)
    Saturday 3 September: 101 Skills Clinic (08h00-12h00)
Saturday 3 September: Confidence Clinic (14h00-16h00)

  • MiWayMTB now also on Facebook

The meeting place for mountain biking enthusiasts set up by innovative short-term insurer MiWay has entered the next stage with a showing on social media website, Facebook. The MiWayMTB fan page, which was initiated last month, has seen its fan base grow steadily, despite a relatively quiet launch.

    MiWay on FB

MiWay’s head of marketing Carine Conradie-Haffejee attributes the daily growth in followers to word-of-mouth advertising and the growing popularity of the MiWayMTB TV show which airs on SuperSport every Monday at 20h30 with repeats throughout the week.

“Adding a Facebook page was the next logical step in our initiative to support and promote mountain biking in South Africa. From sponsoring a collection of races in 2008, we have built our involvement in the community to include television coverage; a blog featuring news, events and results; and now a platform where enthusiasts can engage with us and each other,” she explains.

The success of MiWay’s MTB television program is based on the partnership between the direct insurers’ marketing team and various industry contributors. .

“Inside MiWay we have a strong base of cycling enthusiasts. This enthusiasm has given us a great advantage as they are part of the sport, participating in the events and involved in the community. Of course, it’s also a great advantage to our customers as they are dealing with people who are in-the-know and able to give them the best advice for their requirements.

“Our role as the MTB sponsorship team is to listen to what is happening within the community, understand their desires and find the way to deliver on those as much as possible. Initially the need was for race sponsorship, as local corporate sponsorship tends to favour traditional sports like soccer, rugby and cricket. Later, we identified a need for information which resulted in mtb.miway.co.za. This information blog covers events, reviews, results and interviews as well as articles of interest to the community. As interest grew there was a demand for regular television coverage and here we were able to facilitate a segment dedicated to MTB on SuperSport,” comments Conradie-Haffejee.

Similarly, MiWayMTB’s extension onto Facebook came as a result of community demand. Conradie-Haffejee explains: “The number of comments and emails we were receiving on the site and after each episode of MiWayMTB made it clear that people wanted to discuss what was happening. The best solution was to create a meeting place where they could engage with other fans as well as us. The Facebook page enables the community to do exactly that.”

MiWay will use the Facebook page to deliver even more information for fans and enthusiasts and is in the process of developing an events calendar, product reviews, and previews on what to expect on the TV show. What’s more, the team is in negotiations with a leading MTBer to host community discussions on a regular basis, giving fans the opportunity to get advice from the best in the field.

The MTB community should also keep its eye out for a new challenge – Rave Rides. This programme will be exclusively available to the Facebook fan base.
