  • Ride Before You Buy - 17 April 2010

    The Rietvlei Farm in Johannesburg set the scene on Saturday 17 April for Bicycling’s Ride Before You Buy. Those wanting to test ride a variety of bike brands had the opportunity to do so in great conditions. Spot prizes were given away, courtesy of MiWay. Winners of these gourmet hampers were: Joel Hieber, Dorette Crous and Ian Hoy. A fun day was had by all - we look forward to seeing you at the next Ride Before You Buy in Giba Gorge on 29 May.

  • MiWay Half Marathon Clarens - 17 April 2010

    The MTN XCM Clarens was held in Clarens for the second time on Saturday, 17 April 2010, and drew mountain biking enthusiasts from far and near! The MiWay Half Marathon Series(50km) described as “fun but tough” with the terrain proving as challenging as it was picturesque, winding from the quaint Clarens town square through the Golden Gate National Park countryside and back for 50km.

    Winners
    James Reid (Mr Price/Specialized) kept his unbeaten record with a winning time of 1:50:37. Ryan Ellis finished 2nd in 1:54.00, with Arno du Toit (Reid’s team-mate), 3rd in 1:54.35 and Xander Botha 4th in 1:55.54.
    As usual, Candice Neethling (DCM) easily won the MiWay Half Marathon’s women’s race. She impressed by finishing 16th overall out of 340 riders. Her winning time was 2:13:12.

  • Moseley Celebrates 30th Birthday with World Cup

    Great Britain’s Tracy Moseley celebrated her 30th birthday with podium champagne when she won the women’s downhill event at the first round of the Nissan UCI Mountain Bike World Cup, presented by Shimano, sponsored by DCM Chrome in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa on Sunday.

    Going into Sunday’s final as the fastest qualifier by nine seconds, the Trek World Racing team member had a near flawless run down the 2.8km course to capture victory from Frenchwoman Emmeline Ragot (Suspension Centre) by more than six seconds. Another Frenchwoman, Sabrina Jonnier (Maxxis / Rocky Mountain) took third place.

  • Minnaar Wins World Cup Opener in Pietermaritzburg

     South Africa’s Greg Minnaar responded well to the pressure of racing in his hometown when he won the men’s downhill event at the first round of the Nissan UCI Mountain Bike World Cup, presented by Shimano, sponsored by DCM Chrome in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa on Sunday.

    The 27-year-old reigning World Cup Series champion was the second-last rider to start after having been pipped in Friday’s qualifying round by Australian champion, Mick Hannah. Thousands of fans and curious Pietermaritzburg residents packed the forest-lined edge of the 2.8km course to cheer Minnaar on as he attempted, under great pressure, to secure the victory.   • Graves, Beerten Win 4X Titles in Pietermaritzburg

    Australia’s multi-discipline bicycle racing star, Jared Graves (Yeti Fox), finally ended his run of bad luck when the won the men’s 4X final at the Nissan UCI Mountain Bike World Cup, presented by Shimano, sponsored by DCM Chrome in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday.

    The 26-year-old former world championship silver medallist had a smooth run through the rounds, winning his Round of 32, quarterfinal and semifinal on a course that’s one of the longest 4X tracks in the world. His fellow finalists, former two-time world champion, Czech Michael Prokop, Spain’s current world champion, Rafael Alvarez de Lara Lucas and Switzerland’s 2008 world championship silver medallist, Roger Rinderknecht, were all beaten on the way to the final.     Treble Entertainment, in conjunction with Real Events Management, organisers of both the Nissan UCI Mountain Bike World Cup, presented by Shimano (10-12 April) and the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup (21-22 August), announced on Thursday that DCM Chrome, one of the world’s largest chrome and manganese mining companies, along with some of its allied enterprises, will be the primary sponsor for both events, allowing the organisers to breathe a sigh of relief.
